91 Years of the
City of London Phonograph and Gramophone Society

The City of London Phonograph And Gramophone Society (CLPGS) was founded in 1919 from an amalgamation of societies that had existed from before the First World War. It was originally called The London Edison Society, but Thomas Alva Edison accepted our invitation to be our first Patron on condition that we change the name. We thus renamed ourselves to The City Of London Phonograph Society and we have held meetings in London on a regular basis ever since, except during the Second World War.

Most of our early members were dedicated Edisonites who met to comment on the various products being produced from the West Orange factory until it closed in 1929.
Our current patrons are Oliver Berliner, Grandson of the inventor of the Gramophone, Frank Andrews, a tireless researcher who is continually publishing discographies on many of the British labels, and Brian Rust, whose jazz research and many discographies are respected worldwide.

As a registered charity our members are dedicated to the study and conservation of historical recordings and the means of reproducing them. We have many specialists in machine restoration, cylinder making, discographies biographies and modern reproduction methods. We publish a quarterly journal "For The Record" which is sent to our world-wide membership of about 700. The articles, all provided by members are compiled by our editorial team. We are always seeking new contributors.

We hold monthly meetings in Central London and have frequent meetings in different parts of the UK. We, also hold a couple of "Phonofairs" to buy and sell records and machines and exchange knowledge. We also have a booklist with a wide range of titles available to all comers. Our subscription rates and events details can be found on our website (see bottom of page).
